Using large-format cameras, one of which he built himself, he\u00a0distils years of close observation\u00a0into magnificent contrasty\u00a0enlargements of\u00a0quirky sand banks\u00a0off-shore at low tide, and the rocky\u00a0bulk of\u00a0Steepholm\u00a0island. His\u00a0drawings and paintings of the coastline are in a mixture of\u00a0inks, watercolour, gouache and unconventional DIY materials. Often radically abstract, but sometimes painstakingly descriptive, these evoke the map-drawing\u00a0precision of\u00a0his\u00a0father, an army cartographer in the middle\u00a0east in WWII.\u00a0One of\u00a0Pitt&#8217;s\u00a0major passions is drawing the coast at night, by moonlight\u00a0or\u00a0on a dark\u00a0night\u00a0on the coast of western\u00a0Barry,\u00a0working by the light\u00a0of Cardiff Airport over-spilling from the cliffs at Rhoose.\u00a0Drawn by moonlight,\u00a0viewed down a telescope, his images of Steepholm\u00a0have a visionary quality.\u00a0Sadly, this exhibition lasted only ten days, but\u00a0most of the images\u00a0can still be seen\u00a0on his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guypitt.net\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay,\u00a0I visited Guy Pitt&#8217;s exhibition of paintings, drawings and photographs of the South Wales coast and the Severn estuary.
