Bernard van Lierop Alpha birth sculpture

‘Alpha’ sandcast aluminium (1976) ht (approx.) 25 cms (10 ins)

This piece is one of a series of works inspired by the experience of seeing both my children born. The uterus becomes an independent organism thrusting forth into the human world this unknown being from the blind domain of biology.
I modelled the shape of the sculpture in clay and cast a pattern in Plaster of Paris. From this pattern I made a piece mould, to make a core, so that the sandcasting would be hollow. I also made each sand mould myself, supervised by Knowles Foundry’s expert sand-casters, who poured the molton metal for me, after safety-checking my work.
